The Matrix Slot Review - PlayTech

Familiar Faces and Exciting Bonus Games in this Movie Themed PlayTech Slot

Matrix Slot Review - PlayTechThe first thing you’ll notice about The Matrix Slot from PlayTech are the green lines of numbers scrolling either side of the screen. This will be familiar from the original movies – as will the cast you will find on the symbols. You’ll find Neo (Keanu Reeves), Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) all on the reels. There are also some references which will please the hardcore fans. These include a black ‘Déjà vu’ cat and a black telephone.

You’ll find clips from the movie when you hit big wins, as well as when the bonus games kick in. When you get the free spins, you have a choice. While not quite the choice of red / blue pill, this does make a difference to the games you experience. You can choose spins with more (replicating) agent Smith symbols on the reels or go for the unlimited free spins with sinister machines sticking to the reels.

Bonus Games: Déjà Vu All Over Again

Hitting a full reel of the special black cat wilds on reel 5 will trigger an interesting on reel bonus. First, you’ll hear a clip from the movie, then the cat will walk out of its symbol – appearing on identical symbols now covering reel 1.

Next, you’ll see a spectacular effect. The symbols will explode in slow motion out of the reels, rearrange themselves, and then flicker back onto the reels. The good news is that this new configuration involves at least 8 wilds (the cats) and will set itself to give you a good win.

Free Spins Bonus: Choose Your Pill

You’ll need to get 3 of the free spins icons to trigger this bonus. These appear on reels 1, 3 and 5. When they hit, you see one of the most iconic sequences from the films. Morpheus offers Now a choice of the blue (back to his old life) and red (keep fighting) pills.

Next comes a screen where you will pick which free spins game you prefer. Here is how they work:

Agent Smith Free Spins: Another iconic moment was when Agent Smith kept on replicating in an early fight scene. If you choose the red option, you’ll get a lot of these agent Smith symbols on the reels for 8 (no retrigger) free spins. These can combine with wilds symbols and can make for some huge wins.

Nebuchadnezzar Free Spins: Another clip, and this time a more dramatic one, where the base is coming under attack from machines with lots of tentacles! This free spins bonus round is advertised as ‘Unlimited’. Of course, it needs to stop sometime. That trigger is when you get 6 of the machine wilds on the screen. These are sticky wilds, so ideally you get 5 for a long time! If you get the special base symbol on the middle reel, this will pulse white light, killing any machines on the reels.

Base Game: Agent Smith Wilds and Many Ways to Win

If you hit 5 of a kind wins in the base game with the main character symbols, you’ll see clips from the film. These are preceded by the reels being covered in different coloured lines of numbers.

Neo plays a key role. He is a wild symbol, replacing all the other symbols – other than those that trigger the free spins game. This symbol is a picture of Neo inside the matrix, all made up of green lines of numbers. You’ll get 500 coins for 5 of a kind, with bigger wins coming when you cover several of the 50 win-lines with this symbol.

Three characters from the film come stacked on the reels. They will sometimes take up 2 spots, and other times up to 4. Again, this makes multi-line wins regular. Agent Smith is the highest paying symbol, at 250 coins for 5. Morpheus comes next at 200, followed by Trinity.

Sunglasses, like those worn by Neo, and the iconic black telephone complete the unique symbols. Instead of playing card fillers, PlayTech have used strange looking white characters for the smaller wins. These work well as a contrast to the vivid higher paying symbols.

Setup of the PlayTech ‘The Matrix’ Slot

The base setup is 5 reels and 4 rows, with 50 win-lines. You can bet from 1c a line, though you can’t change the number of lines for this game. I like the ‘Turbo Mode’ option, which speeds up the spins a lot. Auto-play is naturally on offer too.

Iconic Matrix Slot Movie Design

This is an official slot, and so incorporates the real clips and characters from the Matrix films. Overall the game is atmospheric and a little dark. The green numbers flickering in lines behind the reels work very well. You’ll get a slow, dark, ambient soundtrack between spins – then jarring electronic riffs to mark your wins.

When you hit bigger character wins, the reels get obscured by different coloured lines of numbers (just like the famous green ones). You then get a famous clip from the movie. There are even more clips in the free spins bonus game.

In terms of animations on the reels, the machine free spins are my favourite. You can be winning with wilds, only to have them wiped out – prolonging your bonus game while more accumulate. This was a tense moment in the movie, and that has been translated well onto the reels of the Matrix Slot.

Which Pill Will You Choose: PlayTech Matrix Slot Summary

This is an enjoyable movie-themed slot, which does not go too crazy with different bonus game options like many others do. I liked the graphics, and the dark overall feel. The Déjà vu bonus game can trigger some surprisingly big wins – though the main (free spins) bonuses are where the real action is. Whether you choose replicating Agent Smiths, or try to fight those machines, there is plenty of potential for bigger wins.
