6 Reels and a Unique Moving Wild Bonus Game

Age of the Gods: Medusa and Monsters Slot Review - PlayTechMedusa was the snake haired monster of Greek myths that could turn anyone who looked at her to stone. Her story is brought to life in this PlayTech slot – which is part of the Age of the Gods series. Medusa and Monsters is different the others in the series both in game-play and design. For a start there are 6 reels, instead of the usual 5. Gems are stacked (along with the monsters!), and can give you line hits over a huge 164 win-lines.

Expanding Medusa Wild Symbols

The snake haired lady plays a central role in the base game. This is a wild symbol, that will replace any of the regular symbols (not the shield scatters) to give you extra wins.

When Medusa covers any of the rows of this oversized reel set, it expands. You will see an animation where it takes up one or more entire reels, and will see the snakes on her head and wrapped around her body wriggle. This stacked wild can enable a lot of win-lines when the other symbols line up favourably. If you are lucky enough to get 3+ of these, you can be looking at a huge line-hit.

Pick a Monster for the Moving Wild Free Spins

In the myth, Medusa was defeated by a warrior using a mirror to avoid looking at her directly. Mirrored shields are the bonus symbols. If you get 3 or more of them, you’ll go to a screen where you must choose one of 3 shields laid out across the screen.

This will reveal one of the monster symbols. There is a minotaur, mermaid and a set of creatures which look like upright fiery wolves. These are 3 of the highest paying symbols. The one you choose gets the accolade of being ‘petrified’ during the free spins bonus.

You then return to the reels, and will see the Medusa covering reel 6. Any of the monsters you chose will get an animation where they turn to stone, and remain on the reels. After each spin, additional monsters are petrified – and the Medusa wild moves one reel to the left. This keeps going for 6 spins, enabling you to collect a lot of monsters). Note that when the wild Medusa moves over a reel, this removes any of your monster from it. Even with this happening, you have a lot of big win potential in this dramatic game.

Free Spins Bonus - Medusa and Monsters

Unusual 6-Reel Setup of Medusa and Monsters

Most of the Age of the Gods slots from PlayTech have a standard setup of 5 reels by 3-rows. Medusa and Monsters stands out with 6 reels. There are also more symbols on each reel, with a 6-7-6-7-6 format in play. The win-line setup is also non-standard. There are 164 lines in total. What you will find it these do not go up and down like on standard slots – to win you’ll need to group the symbols in narrow lines.

PlayTech has figured that betting 164 coins might not work – and have used fixed prices for spins this time. These start at 50c, and go up from there. You can’t change the number of win-lines. If you are familiar with these slots, then the auto-play and turbo options will come as no surprise.

Line Hit Prizes Over 6-Reels

With 164 win-lines in play, the big wins from this game will come when you get multiple lines paying out at the same time. Individual wins are smaller. The busty mermaid has the best prize – worth 150 coins for the maximum 6 of a kind. Next comes the minotaur at 100 coins for 6, with the fiery wolves paying 75.

There are tree more unique symbols, all showing ancient Greek icons. These are a ship, sword and winged helmet. Gems take the place of playing cards to provide the smaller wins.

All symbols come in stacks (the monsters are over-sized graphics), giving you plenty of opportunity for multi-line wins.

Win a 6-Figure Jackpot on Medusa & Monsters

A big attraction of the Age of the Gods slots is the jackpot they share. There are 4 progressives to win, which are called the ‘Power’ jackpots. There is no combination of monsters that will trigger this, instead you win them at random.

After any spin, the jackpot game (which involves picking gold coins until you match 3) can kick in. The biggest of the jackpots (called ‘Ultimate Power’) is in the 6-figure ($100,000+) range. You can win these progressives at any stake, though the more you bet, the better chance you have at triggering one.

Medusa and Monsters Slot - Reels

Unique Sunset Design

There is more movement than usual around the reels for this title. You will see waves under the reels, sometimes crashing against rocks on the right-hand side. The reel setup is striking, immediately showing you that this is an unusual game. Stacked gems, with monsters and winged helmets in between, gives a dramatic feel to the graphics. The reels are wrapped in gold, with golden snakes on each corner.

Medusa is the stand out symbol, and comes to life when she expands to fill entire reels. The way those snakes writhe really does look effective. The other monsters are nicely drawn, and the golden winged helmet also caught my eye.

Look out for the turning to stone animation in the free spins bonus, along with the suitably eerie sound effect!

Should You Use a Mirror to Play Medusa and Monsters?

For some unique game-play, this Age of the Gods slot is certainly worth a spin. Not many online slots have 6 reels, 164 win-lines and expanding wilds on top! Big wins will come from those times you hit multiple 6-of-a-kind wins.

The free spins game is short (only 6 spins), though does have plenty of big win potential. Your selected monster gets turned to stone, and sticks to the reels, giving you multiple shots at lining them up across all 6 reels. Add in the big progressive jackpots, and there is a lot to like about this Greek myths slot title.
