Five Dragons is one of those slots that is so popular that is has spawned a series of sequels. The games have an Asian theme and players look to the bonus rounds, where there’s an added tactical element. With the reel power format from Aristocrat, you are not constrained by a set number of win-lines.
Five Dragons – The Original Game
The Five Dragons slot plays on a 5x3 reel set up. The Reel Power format is in play, giving players 243 ways to win on every spin. On those reels you find golden statues of dragons, fish, lions and golden turtles. Playing card symbols ranging from 9 through to Ace complete the lower end of the pay table.
In the base game there is a green dragon as the wild and this will substitute for all other symbols in the game aside from the bonus symbol.
The Tactical Bonus Game
To trigger the bonus game in Five Dragons you need to line up 3, 4 or 5 coins in a row, which immediately pay 5, 10 or 50x your stake.
Now you have a decision to make from the following five options:
- White Dragon – 20 free spins where a wild win multiplies your pay by 2x, 3x or 5x.
- Red Dragon – 15 free spins where a wild win multiplies your pay by 3x, 5x or 8x.
- Black Dragon – 10 free spins where a wild win multiplies your pay by 5x, 8x or 10x.
- Blue Dragon – 8 free spins where a wild win multiplies your pay by 8x, 10x or 15x.
- Yellow Dragon – 5 free spins where a wild win multiplies your pay by 10x, 15x or 30x.
This makes for an interesting decision, as you are effectively setting the variance levels. You can play it safe and take the 20 free spins and those smaller multipliers. At the other end of the spectrum, you can go for it and have just 5 free spins, with those incredible multipliers. Many players will choose the black dragon where the middle ground is.
Other Five Dragons Variations
Five Dragons Deluxe
In some ways, Five Dragons Deluxe could just as easily have been called 7 Dragons. This is due to the bonus feature having an extended set of 7 options. There are six standard options, beginning with 25 free spins with 2x, 3x or 5x multipliers, up to 6 free spins with 15x, 30x or 40x multipliers. This extended choice makes things more tactical as it is, however, you also have one more option to choose from. The ‘Mystery Option’ is there for those who just can’t decide. This seventh option awards you a random number of spins alongside a random set of multipliers.
Five Dragons Gold
This next version is a natural progression from the Deluxe version. In this game you have the same seven options in the bonus game again, however you have an added bonus. Reels 2, 3 and 4 in the free spins round are now four symbols high. This might not seem significant at first, but for each spin in the bonus you now have 576 ways to win, meaning you are around 2.5x more likely to win than in the base game. The visuals are stepped up a notch due to a large dragon symbol now above the reels throughout the feature. The dragon image is based on the one you chose for the feature.
Five Dragons Grand
It’s quite a change with this version of the game. The base game now has a 3x5x5x5x3 set up, offering 1,125 ways to win on each spin, a change from the standard 243 in previous versions. In addition, it’s all change with the bonus feature. At first you have a spin of the Jackpot wheel when activating the feature. On the wheel you can immediately win one of the progressive jackpots on offer, while you can also win extra spins. These spins are added to the now 6 choices you find in this version. The visuals in this version of the game take a real leap, with the dragons intertwining themselves as they fly through the multiple screens.
Five Dragons Rapid
It’s back to the maximum seven choices when you land the free spins feature playing Five Dragons Rapid. In this game there is once again the chance to win a jackpot. The jackpot round is randomly activated and shows a screen showing 15 gold coins. You select the coins in turn and the round is over when you land three matching coins. The perfect scenario sees you reveal the Grand Jackpot coins. Smaller wins are yours when you hit the Major, Minor or Empire bonus wins.
