Recover Shards and Win One of 5 Different Jackpots in this Sherlock Holmes Themed Online Slot
While this might not be as spectacular as the latest live casino slot from IGT, Holmes and the Stolen Stones is an enjoyable game. It has the atmosphere of a great mystery, dark in some places, edgy in others. You’ll find Sherlock Holmes on the reels, along with Watson, the famous magnifying glass and more.
Above each of the 5 reels, you will see a jackpot. The smallest is on the left – and they grow as you move over the reels. A progressive element in the base game, and a quicker one during the free spins, allows you to win these jackpots. That free spins game also sees you wins tripled. Topping it all is a game in a warehouse, where you’ll pick from mysterious crates.

Elementary My Dear Watson: Holmes and the Stolen Stones Slot Setup
You’ll find progressive elements in this game, though the base setup will be instantly familiar. There are 5 reels, each with 3 rows of symbols. The 20 win-lines is fixed / non-adjustable.
Bets can be from just 20c per spin and up, you can win the jackpots at all bet sizes – though your chances of bagging one does increase the more you wager. Auto-play is available, though not obvious. This is the small arrow + triangle combination to the right of the main spin button. If you click the + button (it is pink) to the far bottom left, them you’ll find controls for the speed, sound and pay-out information.
Smoking Holmes and Other Winning Combinations
It is unusual to find a slot without a wild symbol, though the regular wins and progressive features more than make up for this. Some of those wins can be on the larger side. Holmes naturally has the biggest prize. 5 of these will get you 4,000 coins. Watson is in his usual supporting role, worth 2000 coins for 5. All the symbols on Holmes and the Stolen Stones require a minimum of 3 of a kind to trigger a win.
There are two more unique regular symbols. A leather-bound book pays 1000 coins, and a magnifying glass, which is shown over the top of a broken window, pays 750.
An air of mystery is added by the playing card suit symbols. These have been given a detailed overhaul, with elaborate decorations and gems on them.
In addition to these regular symbols, you will get 3 more symbols on the reels. Two are to trigger the bonuses – with the other one brightly coloured stones. Those stones are involved in the progressive jackpots that you will see above the reels.
Progressive Elements of the Base Game
On any spin, you can get a brightly coloured shard (looks like a cut stick of glass). When you get one there is an animation, where it moves to the top of your screen. Above each reel there are 5 triangular holes. As you play you will fill these up with shards. The idea is that when all 5 are in place, you win that progressive jackpot. At the time of writing those were between $50 and $10000 – certainly worth winning.
There are other ways to win this jackpot too – via the bonus games.
Free Spins Bonus Games with Diamonds and 3x Wins
Bonus symbols show a keyhole in gold. You need 3 of these anywhere in view to trigger the free spins bonus game. If you get 4 or 5, you get a prize of 1000 or 10,000 coins on top. Next the reels shift to the left, revealing a doorway, from which light comes out.
When you start the free spins, the shapes near the progressive jackpot amounts will have changed. These now accommodate diamonds. Those diamonds appear on the reels frequently, filling the gaps. You need to fill all 5 to win one of the prizes. Any regular wins you get during this free spins game are tripled compared to the pay table.
Bonus Game: Search the Crates
A rusty keyhole symbol triggers the other bonus game. This is a picks bonus, where you search crates for money and shards. Once again, more bonus symbols will pay cash as well as giving you more picks. You will see a stack of crates and click on them one at a time.
If you find shards during this bonus, these are transferred to the main game – giving you a better shot at winning a progressive jackpot there. If you find a smoke bomb, that will explode – ending your bonus.
Design: Strange Lack of Detail in Watson and Holmes
A lot of the symbols are detailed, and ornately designed. What stuck me as strange about this slot is the lack of detail in Holmes and Watson. They look fine, just a little fuzzy – almost as if the were designed on a different scale / sizing.
Overall, the look and feel has that dark, foggy Victorian London feel. The gems above the reels and stonework with doorways either side of them give a crowded feel to the game. I like the bonus symbol, the one with the rusty keyhole is excellent. The music is edgy, with strings dominating.
Should You Unlock the Mysteries of Holmes and the Stolen Stones?
It is the progressive elements which stood out for me with this slot. The excitement levels certainly rise when you are 1 shard / diamond away from a big prize. Unlike on most slots, the single biggest line win comes from the free spins symbols – 5 of these get you a 10k scatter prize.
With 2 bonus games, and an edgy feel, this slot is certainly worth a spin. I wonder if I will ever solve the mystery of why the Holmes and Watson symbols are not too detailed?
