Roadmap To SNG Success – A Sit N Go FAQ – Part #4

From SNG Beginner To Online Pro – This SNG FAQ Takes You Down The Road To Sit N Go Success – Part #4 – Advanced Strategy Concepts!

by Mark

This is the final part of our SNG Frequently Asked Questions series, looking at the areas which are beyond the basics. The Advanced Sit N Go Strategy concepts introduced below are just the tip of the iceberg – there are many more strategy tips, moves and approaches to SNG play in the numerous articles here at SNG Planet – home of Sit N Go tournament poker.

Are There Circumstances In Which ICM Should Be Ignored?

As you gain experience with the mathematical bubble strategy suggested by ICM, a number of situations in which this model should be ignored (for even greater profits) will become apparent. Most of these situations will involve micro-stack bubble play, however taking small negative $ev edges before the bubble has been suggested in this thought provoking article – A Turbo SNG Strategy That Is Outside The Box – by winning SNG Pro Albatross77.

How Do I Put Opponents On Accurate Calling / Pushing Ranges?

As you gain experience at the tables, putting opponents onto call / push ranges for all-in bubble situations will become intuitive. To get you started on this critical SNG skill we have produced a guide to push / fold ranges in Sit N Go tournaments. Using tools such as the excellent SNG Wiz will allow you to replay hands after a session – further improving your ability to accurately assess those opponent ranges.

How Can I Adapt My Bubble Strategy For Different Opponents And Stack Sizes?

The most critical aspect of SNG Bubble play is the ability to accurately put your opponents on all-in pushing and calling ranges. Once you have done this you can factor in stack sizes and come up with a strategy that is difficult to exploit. Advanced Bubble Strategy including deliberately keeping the bubble alive and how to adjust to the position of different stacks can then be taken into account.

Should I Move To The Higher Level SNGs Or Add More Mid-Level Tables?

The question of whether to move up SNG levels from the lower ($5 to $10) to mid ($33 to $55) levels to the higher buy-in SNGs or simply add more tables comes down to your expectations of hourly profits. At the $100+ level there will often not be enough games to multi-table, meaning that the extra profits you make will be reduced by playing fewer games. The smaller ROI at the higher levels will also mean you suffer from greater variance – even as a profitable player. Often this question comes down to a personal preference of whether grinding multiple tables for increased profit is desirable for you.
