Chinese Dragons Meet Any-Reel Respins on This Asian Themed Slot

Dragon Dance Slot Detailed Review MicroGamingIn many ways, this is a very traditional Asian themed slot. There is a chiming, rhythmic soundtrack, and the use of the lucky red is prominent. Dragons are not the scary, fire-breathing types, these are the costumed dragons used on holidays like the Chinese New Year. Joining them on the reels are many other iconic symbols. These include firecrackers (these are the scatter symbols) and Fu Babies (or at least adults dressed like them!).

There are a couple of interesting parts of the game play. MicroGaming have incorporated their ‘respin any reel’ system into the Dragon Dance slot. This gives you a lot of flexibility, and the ability to try again if you get a near miss. There is also a free spins bonus game. Here you get tripled wins for your free spins – giving you a much better chance of scooping a big win.

Setup of the Dragon Dance Asian Slot

You’ll find win-lines dispensed with, and an all-ways system in place with Dragon Dance. This does make the base game wins smaller, though to make up for this, you’ll hit them more frequently. There are 243 possible permutations of wins, over a 5x3 grid of the reels. Bets are in increments of 25c, with high stakes possible. I like the way the pay table updates according to your bet size. This leaves no doubt about the amount you can win.

Respin Any Reel System

I tend to think of this as more of a novelty than something to profit from. After any spin, you can respin the reels one at a time – at a cost. You will see the price for each reel displayed, with an individual green button for each one. These prices update based on your chances of winning (the house takes a small edge as always).

You can only win with each combination once. Examples include several reels with wilds or high paying symbols, with one missing (say, reel 2). This might cost you 10x your original spin or even more to respin. If you hit, you can expect a big win. A ‘dead loss’ spin might only cost you 10c to respin a reel. Here you are hoping for another respin spot with the new symbols that land.

I recommend checking this out once – you’ll soon find out whether it is for you or not.

Regular Winning Combinations on the Dragon Dance Slot

Wild symbols (which show the slot logo) only appear on reels 2 and 4 – and so can’t have any wins of their own. They will substitute for all the symbols except the scatters.

Two different dragons make up the highest paying symbols. The first is gold and has an orb with 3 purple feet sharing the reels with him. This is worth 160x your spin amount for 5 of a kind. The other dragon is one in costume, taking the Dragon Dance from the title literally. This dragon will get you 100x your spin amount for 5 of a kind.

Those people dressed as Fu Babies, a guy in yellow hitting a drum, and a lady with some cymbals complete the unique / higher paying symbols.

Lower pays come from playing cards. These do have a hint of Asia in the font / design – with dragons, fans and cymbals attached to them.

Scatter Wins and Tripled Free Spins

Fire crackers in a long chain are scatter symbols. Just in case there was any doubt, these have the word ‘scatter’ on them in gold letters. You’ll get a prize based on the total number in view for these. The biggest is 100x your bet for 5.

3 or more scatters will trigger a free spins bonus game – and a brand new, livelier, tune. The symbols and game-play stays the same, though you’ll benefit from triple the prize for all your wins for a full 15 free spins. You can’t use the respin a reel system while the free spins are running. You can retrigger for more spins.

Classic (and Relatively Simple) Asian Style Slot Design

There are some welcome game-play variations for Dragon Dance, though nothing stands out from 100’s of similar slots in terms of the design.

Beside the reels, you’ll see a red glow on the street. Above them is the roof of a pagoda, with the Dragon Dance logo having two gold dragons, one each side. The reels are white, and there is a lot of colour in the symbols. I’d say filler playing cards are welcome here, otherwise it would be a chaotic scene full of too much colour!

There are some nice minor animations when you win. The fire cracker scatters are a good example. These bulge forward with a 3D effect. I like both dragons, though the golden one with his orb wins out. This one manages to look fierce and crazy at the same time.

After a while, that repeating loop of a pinking rhythmic traditional tune does get annoying. Hopefully, this will be drowned out by the big win noises for you!

Should You Get on Down with the Dragon Dance Slot?

If you enjoy an Asian style slot, then this one is worth a look. It won’t blow you away with graphics or animations, though it ticks all the right boxes in terms of game play and big win potential.

You can respin any reel individually, at a cost which is dynamically updated depending on the way the symbols fall. This can give you a second shot at hitting a big win if you ‘just miss’ on one reel. Keep in mind that if your chances of winning are high, those respin will get expensive.

The free spins game is more familiar. Here you get 15 spins with tripled wins. This gives you a shot at some bigger prizes, though the respin a reel feature does not get used here.
