The title of this slot makes it sound like it should be funny. While this is more ‘Indiana Jones’ than most Egypt-themed slots, and a lot of fun to play, it is not in the funny category at all. Dave is an adventurer, after a gemstone, called the Eye of Ra. To get it, he does into a pyramid and completes tasks involving picks and wheels.
What I liked best about this slot is that you have multiple shots at each part of the bonus game. For example, if you only need one eye to open a doorway and missed out last time around. You’ll get 3 more picks to find that one eye next time – rather than having to start again from scratch.
There are on reel features too, involving expanding wilds, which can complete several win-lines at once.

Progressive Bonus Adventure – Over 3 Levels
When you first spin the reels of Daring Dave and the Eye of Ra, you’ll see special bonus symbols on reels 1 and 5 which say, ‘Bonus Level 1’. You’ll need to complete this part of the adventure before they switch to say level 2 – and finally to level 3.
Each part of the bonus includes a short-animated intro. Here you will see the explorer Dave entering a chamber, and hear a voice over announce this and the task on hand.
There are three tasks to complete.
#1 – Pick 3 Stones
You see some bird-god statues, and either side of them are a total of 8 stones, with carvings on them. You get 3 picks and need to find 3 stones with eye of Ra symbols on them. These are collected above a stone doorway. You get a prize whatever you pick. If you do not manage to get all 3 eyes first time, you come back later with 3 more picks. Now there are only 5 stones remaining. If you fail a 2nd time, you will definitely move forward the 3rd. There will only be 2 stones left to pick at this point – and you will have 3 attempts.
#2 – The Wheel of Ra
Different Birds this time, with longer beaks. There is also an elaborate stone wheel in view. Around the outside are 3 pointers, with runes carved into them. You get 3 spins, and your task is to activate all of the pointers, by having them land on special segments of the wheel. The other segments have multipliers, which are cash awards based on your total bet on the triggering spin. Once again, you might only get 1 or 2 pointers activated the first time, though you can keep coming back for more tried with 2 bonus symbols.
#3 – Pedestals Bonus Game
The third and final part of the adventure is the simplest. You will see 3 circles, the top of pedestals that Dave needs to jump onto. Above them is a huge statue of Ra, and the gem that ends this quest. You only get one pick, and your pedestal might disintegrate. Luckily, you do not go backwards, and can return to this chamber up to 3 times.
Base Game: Expanding Wild Feature
Daring Dave does not only appear in the bonus games. You will meet him on the reels as a wild symbol. If it is possible to create some extra wins, Dave symbols will expand, covering all 3 spots on the reels. This shows a picture of Dave standing, with the giant letters of the word ‘Wild’ beside him.
It is possible to get more than one of these on a single spin.
There are also scatter symbols, in the form of a gold jewel with the eye of Ra on it. These pay based on the total number on the reels. The top prize for 5 in view (they don’t need to be on a win-line) is 125x your total spin amount.
Betting Setup and Regular Wins
Nothing too daring about the setup. You’ll find a very standard 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 win-lines. Like on all PlayTech Slots, betting on Daring Dave and the Eye of Ra goes sky high – though you can spin the reels from 20x a time and up. Auto-play is offered, though it does not have a ‘until feature’ option.
For the wins, the wild symbols with Daring Dave are the best payers. These are worth 5,000 coins for 5 of a kind. With expanding symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 – this is the best route to those extra big wins.
3 Gods (maybe Ra in different guises?) are the next biggest prizes, these are worth between 750 and 300 coins for the maximum 5. No Egyptian slot would be complete without at least one scarab beetle. This game uses one on a stone effect background as one of the other unique symbols. Boldly coloured playing cards complete the set.
Mixed Design of the Daring Dave and the Eye of Ra Slot
This slot reveals better and better graphics elements the longer you play it. On first view, it looks plain – or at least unexceptional within the niche. The reels are big, taking up most of your screen. Above them you can see pyramids in the background, and a special pyramid showing your progress through the bonus on the top left.
With so many playing card symbols, the initial state of the reels looks plain. When Daring Dave expands to cover entire reels, things start to look better. When you combine this with the scatters that pop-out in a 3D effect, the graphics improve once again.
Then you hit a bonus game, and see a 3D animation, like a console game. This is immediately followed by hugely detailed picks games. At this point, you’ll be wondering how you ever thought of this slot as being plain…
